At this mornings business breakfast I raised the role of social networking in business marketing and received quite a few ‘rolled-eyes’ as a result. Interestingly enough nearly everyone was a member of LinkedIn! None had ventured into the Facebook or Twitter worlds other than for domestic purposes. When I mentioned the size and growth figures (particularily this year) of some of the more popular social networking sites they became a little more interested in their marketing potential.
LinkedIn – Founded May 2003. As of August 2009; 45 million users. This has grown from 10 million users since February 2009.
twitter – Founded March 2006. 17 million users in April 2009, 32 million users in August 2009, expected to reach 100 million users by the end of the year.
facebook – Founded February 2004. As of August 2009, 250+ million users with a target of 1Billion!
