The UK could face power shortages in the years ahead, according to the energy regulator, Ofgem, in their Project Discovery update issued today, 3/2/10. Current estimates indicate that there should be enough capacity until 2015, but there will be increasing stress in the supply system unless the Government and the energy industry take significant coordinated steps to maintain the security of supply.
The possible shortfall comes from a number of factors:
Ofgem estimate an investment of up to £200bn will be needed by 2020, and has set out a series of ideas and options to unlock the necessary funds.

The impact on the domestic and business consumer is inevitable – prices will increase, and therefore it is increasingly important to ensure that all users look to reduce their consumption, and costs, by becoming more energy efficient.
