One of quickest and easiest way to reduce your organisation’s overheads is to create a computer equipment policy. Studies have shown that power management of computers and monitors can significantly reduce their energy consumption, saving hundreds or thousands of pounds a year on electricity costs. The energy consumption of computer equipment is second only to office lighting.
The three key issues your computer equipment policy should address are as follows:
1) Upgrading old equipment
Technology is constantly advancing, and the energy efficiency ratings of new computer equipment continue to improve. Replacing your current equipment with new, energy efficient equipment can represent substantial savings, along with reduced costs of air-conditioning and cooling. However, do make sure you recycle your old computer equipment: use a qualified waste disposal company.
2) Power management
Approximately half of all office computers are continuously left on overnight and at weekends. As evenings and weekends account for 75% of the week, the impact on energy costs is significant. Therefore ensuring computers are turned off at night and over the weekends dramatically increases their energy efficiency and reduces your electricity bill. You can make further savings by ensuring computers enter low power mode when they are idle during the day.
3) Maintenance schedule
Well-maintained computer equipment is more efficient and lasts longer. Establish a maintenance schedule, keep equipment free from obstructions and clean filters and fans regularly to prevent over-heating.
Build these three considerations into your new computer equipment policy and it will not be long before you are enjoying substantial savings on your energy bill – as well as helping to reduce your organisation’s carbon footprint.
