According to research conducted by Ofcom, average mobile broadband download speed is currently around 4 times slower than that for fixed broadband and the average time taken to load a web page is more than 16 times longer. [...]
In addition to geographical variations, the research findings also indicate that download speeds are higher with some 3G network operators than with others (see chart). Unsurprisingly, urban areas outperformed rural areas due to better 3G network coverage. More surprising are the variations in performance in urban areas with city centre locations offering no guarantees of good performance.
To assist consumers, Ofcom has published a guide offering advice on choosing a mobile broadband service.
No significant improvements in mobile broadband performance are expected until the rollout of additional spectrum for mobile services in the UK, which is expected to begin in 2013. This additional spectrum will provide capacity for 4G technology which should be able to deliver significantly better mobile broadband performance.
