If there is one aspect of my work which frustrates me beyond belief it’s those (thankfully relatively few) dodgy operators who prey on small businesses and individuals with offers of fantastic deals on their electricity and gas. These people use strong-arm tactics to intimidate consumers into rushing into deals under threat of disconnection and worse if they don’t sign up there and then. We hear stories that one such operator actually tells their potential victims that they will keep calling until they sign up!
My colleagues at Auditel often share the experiences of their clients who receive these calls (anonymously of course). As Auditel clients we can protect them by ensuring that no contract is agreed without our checking it out first (although our involvement usually means the client is already signed up to a first class deal already!). But there must be countless victims who don’t get the protection of bona fide energy consultants and the link below refers to a Daily Mail story about a small businessman who is actually being driven out of business by such a rogue trader.
If you receive a call telling you that unless you register your supply with the caller’s company your supply will be removed or transferred onto an exorbitant rate, you are being misled. You may get many calls from the same company despite your continued refusal and the chances are the calls will become increasingly nasty. One solution is of course to register with BT’s Telephone Preference Service which should stop all sales calls to your number on pain of a £5,000 fine.
