We are spending 45% of our waking ours using media and communications according to Ofcom research. That includes watching TV and using mobiles and other communications devices.
We are sending four times as many texts than in 2004 and spending almost a quarter of our time on the internet and scoial networking sites. We watch 3 hours and 45 minutes per day watching TV.
The rising popularity of smartphones is increasing our use of communications and allowing us to multi-task, particularly those of us in the under 25 age group. The average person uses 8 hours and 48 minutes of media in just over 7 hours during the average day. And the 55 age group are catching up with 50% now having broadband at home – the fastest growing age group.
Despite all this, the average monthly household spend on comunications has fallen for the fifth year in a row. Since 2004 the real household spend per month has fallen 9.4% to £91.24 as more people choose to buy their services in discounted packages.
