So the World Cup is over, although for most England fans it was over a long time ago, and we can now get back to the normal worries of a British summer, such as is it going to stay dry long enough to get the BBQ out. Having said that I enjoyed the World Cup, although I am not sure I could stand the constant noise caused by the Vuvuzela (even my iPhone app version gets annoying after a couple of minutes), and the standard of football seemed to increase as the tournament did. The other summer sporting event that occupies most thoughts is Wimbledon, and again we have failed to deliver a champion, again expectations are so high that it is not really surprising. At least there is the Open to look forward to, and with a bunch of English guys coming into form at the right time, it could well be that we will have a home-grown champion there, again after a long break.
For those who have read some of my blogs will know that I play cricket for my local cricket club and enjoyed an absolutely phenomenal start to the season, scoring my first ever league century and following it up the following week with the second. Well now down to earth with a bump, scores of 13, 9 and 0 in my last three innings have certainly proved the theory in my case that class is permanent and form temporary. I know where my limitations are, and have no ideas that my success at the beginning of the season was in any way attributable to class. Oh well there is always next week, and hopefully the return of form will enable me to enjoy the rest of the season.
I couldn’t leave you however without some comment on the announcement earlier this week that the UK Government is seeking help from Facebook in identifying areas where cuts can be made to achieve the reduction in government spending announced in the recent budget. I have always expressed concerns over the Government’s ability to deliver on this program and this I think proves that my concerns are justified. The Government obviously has so little faith in its own ability that it is turning to the general public to help!!! I rest my case, your honour!!
