Here we sit, camped out on the bottom line, increasing our client’s profit by reducing their costs.

Lego line dancing….. not the bottom line
I had a random call last week from BBC Radio Somerset. They knew that I worked with a variety of local businesses and they knew that Adams Foods (the largest employer in Wincanton) were leaving the local business park, with the loss of 180 local jobs. The journalist asked for my views on the state of the economy in the area and how local businesses were fairing.
I had just got back from a BNI networking meeting @ Holbrook House Hotel and it had been a goodie. 25 local business men and women talking about the businesses they ran and the overall vibe was incredibly upbeat (we’d just hit half a million pounds – business created from referrals). I think the key thing with the recession down in this part of the world is that it has almost created a Blitz mentality. Business owners want to help and support other local business owners and pull together to do “their bit”. Times aren’t easy but the community spirit is flourishing and it feels good to be amongst it.
It’s actually a great time to be out of the corporate banking world and going it alone. No longer is the sword of Damocles hanging above our heads, waiting for the chop, keeping your head down in the hope that you will avoid the beckoning finger… excuse me, can I have a word.. and you know that the pension, the benefits, the steady salary is all coming to an end. At least running your own business you know that only YOU are in control. If you keep up the good work, the integrity and the enthusiasm, people will keep knocking on your door and business will go on. Yes, it’s a recession, but it doesn’t necessarily mean doom and gloom.
And in a recession, people obviously look to their bottom line. Saving on overheads is the simplest and quickest way to increase that net profit figure. Don’t forget that this is what we are trained to do……!
My radio interviewer asked me one more quick question.. could I name one business in Wincanton that seemed to be thriving? It had to be Divine Wines on the High Street. Jenny has that place buzzing. Try it if you haven’t done so already. Mine’s a latte and a bottle of Shiraz for later…
