“BT is set to almost double the number of UK homes and businesses that can receive faster broadband services over its copper lines by extending the reach of its “next-generation” network to cover 75 per cent of the country, The Times has learnt.
Around 40 per cent of UK homes and businesses are covered by BT’s fast copper network which offers speeds of up to 24 megabits a second but BT Wholesale is set to announce that it will almost double the reach of the network by Spring 2011.”
This appears to be a major step in achieving the ambitious aims of the government’s Digital Britain plan – remember Mr. Brown’s government is going to charge us all 50p a month to fund it. However, those of us with log memories of the telecoms sector may be excused if we wait to see it begin to happen in reality. Such announcements have not always been followed by action. Such a move, however, would be very welcome for businesses. Many business will be interested in harnessing the power of the Web for their commercial ends and faster broadband services will enable them to enrich the experience of their customers. However, we must not overlook the importance of such a move at the infrastructure level as broadband connections can be used to carry IP services e.g voice calls at no extra cost. If you have a broadband connection you can use it to allow calls between different sites in your businesses without the need for separate traditional phone lines incurring rental and call costs. The opportunities are enormous and Auditel can help businesses navigate through the numerous possibilities and avoid the pitfalls along the way.
