As the landfill tax increases by a further 20% in just a few days time (1st April 2010), it’s a timely reminder that all organisations should consider their waste strategy.

Get your waste strategy wrong and your organisation could be wasting £000’s in inefficiencies; worse still you could end up with a substantial fine. Last year Red Bull was fined £261,268 after it failed to meet its requirements to recover and recycle packaging waste.

The start point of any waste strategy is to understand which regulations apply to your organisation. You don’t want to end up with a substantial fine. A simple example is the Waste Transfer Note (WTN). Your are probably aware that all waste has to have an accompanying WTN, but did you know that it is your responsibility and, that you need to keep them for two year? Luckily most waste carriers will produce one for you.

Are you aware that as the waste producer you are required to ensure that your waste is pre-treated before it goes to landfill? Do you know what pre-treatment entails?

Having established which regulations affect your organisation, the next step is to understand what waste you actually produce. At this point you can then think about changing your processes to reduce your waste levels. This can have a two-fold effect on your costs: reducing the amount of materials purchased and reducing your waste disposal costs. Of course, if you manage to reduce the level of packaging you use at the same time, you could reduce your Packaging Waste Recovery Note (PRN) requirements; having a further benefit to your bottom line.

What about recycling? Recycling will become more economically viable over the next few years as Landfill tax will increase by £8 per tonne per annum until April 2013. Have you considered whether some of your waste might maybe of value to another organisation?

If you are unsure how to make the most of your waste whilst increasing your profitability why not get in touch?

There is now less than one month left before the mandatory registration process for the CRC Energy Efficieny Scheme starts. Are you ready?

Formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment, the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is the UK’s mandatory climate change and energy saving scheme. It is central to the UK’s strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, as set out in the Climate Change Act 2008. It has been designed to raise awareness in large organisations, especially at senior level, and encourage changes in behaviour and infrastructure.

Put simply, CRC is a cap-and-trade scheme which offers financial incentives in return for improved energy efficiency.

Does it apply to your organisation?

Well all organisations with half-hourly (HH) electricity meter will be obliged to register (approximately 70,000 organisations) and, of them, an estimated 5,000 large public and private sector organisations whose annual consumption in 2008 exceeded 6,000MWh will be legally bound to participate fully or face financial and other penalties.

Still unsure whether it applies to your organisation, then why not read our quick guide…….Auditel CRC Guide

The Valuation Office have now listed their draft evaluations which will come into effect on 1st April 2010. If you have not yet received yours through the post (due to the ongoing industrial action), then you can view it online at www.voa.gov.uk .

The Valuation Office are urging businesses to check the draft rating valusations as these will be the basis on which business rates are charged from the 1st April 2010.

The new Valuation Office website has been designed to make the process of reviewing your valuatio as quick and easy as possible. By logging on to www.voa.gov.uk/2010 ratepayers will be able to compare their details with other similar properties and, where necessary, contact VOA for assistance. The site offers lots of straightforward help and even short videos on key topics, designed to explain the valuation process.

Each valuation clearly shows the details of the business property, whether it is a shop, an office or a warehouse, including the number of rooms, their description and size, and the value applied to each area.

If you are unsure and want professional advice then please ensure the person you engage is a member of one of the three main representative bodies – the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation, or the Ratings Surveyors Association.

Prior to engagement, ask for a clear breakdown of fees you will be expected to pay and check the details of any contract or agreement you are asked to sign.

Over the next few months it is likely that there will be a plethora of businesses cold calling about rates re-evaluations. Whilst the majority wil be legitimate please be wary of:

Anyone who wants payment for their service up front

Anyone who requests payment for lodging an appeal – this is free

Anyone who makes promises to reduce your rateable value or your business rates bill without knowing the details of your valuation

Bear in mind that a reduction in ratebale value does not necessarily mean a reduction in your rates bill.

If you do need any advice please contact Auditel as we have assisted many of our clients in this matter.

According to a recent survey by Envirowise, businesses in the UK could be losing up to £10 million by failing to maximise the potential of water efficiency.

In a recent survey of UK businesses, almost two thirds of respondents said they do not currently measure or monitor their water use at all, and a huge 85% do not have any water reduction targets in place.

However, Envirowise estimates that businesses could reduce their water bills by as much as a third if they were to take steps to manage their water use more effectively.

You might be surpirsed how simple things can waste large volumes of water. Consider a tap dripping two drops a second. Over a year, this could equate to 10,000 litres of wasted water!

Stopping dripping taps etc is relativley easy and will certainly help to increase your water efficiency, but if you want to look at more strategic ways of increasing your water efficiency and untapping cost savings, why not talk to Auditel.

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
LONDON -(Dow Jones)- The U.K.’s largest gas and electricity retailer, Centrica PLC (CNA.LN), said Wednesday it has bought a 22.3% stake in North Sea gas producer Venture Production PLC (VPC.LN) for GBP239.4 million.
Centrica said it may in the future make a full cash offer for Venture, but there is no certainty at this stage.
It has already acquired 33,016,611 Venture shares at 725 pence a share.
Centrica doesn’t produce enough gas to supply all of its retail customers in the U.K. and its earnings are highly exposed to volatility in wholesale gas prices. One of the company’s strategic goals is to reduce this exposure by acquiring gas producing assets.
It is also in talks with Electricite de France SA (1024251.FR) about taking a 25% stake in its nuclear subsidiary British Energy.
At 1122 GMT Centrica shares were up 0.4%, or 1p, at 247p. Venture shares were up 26.4%, or 153p, at 733p, in a flat broader market.

There is no doubt that there is exceptional expertise to be had but picking who and how to engage represents a potentially high risk for any organisation. Too often the risk of engagement is borne by the organisation, who only after they have paid is it too late in realising the value that could have been achieved.

Any organisation that now needs to consider risk before gain needs to ask itself some fundamental questions.

What of the tasks they need to give more time to whilst they are engaged in tasks that they might have little taste for or aptitude to? Will those tasks suffer and at what cost both in time, effectiveness and money? It’s an illusion that money saved by internal resources is a 100% gain.

There is a big difference between cutting costs and managing them. Price is only a very narrow component of a sustained and intense analysis of how to permanently and resolutely keep costs under control. As much benefit can be gained, from understanding how costs arose in the first place and what steps can be taken to manage these down. If this isn’t aligned with a comprehensive understanding of alternatives in the marketplace, a great deal of potential cost saving advantage is lost.

Just one example can highlight this: Recently a now client underwent an internal review of their costs and tendered for a different supplier for their telecoms cost. Unfortunately the tender was not subject to a detailed analysis and failed to pick up fraudulent activity by a member of staff. The cost to the company of this was close to £8,000 p.a.

The company did indeed reduce their costs but were now getting only slightly better rates for the fraudulent activity instead of eliminating the cost entirely. This “saving” dwarfed the advantage gained by keeping the exercise in‐house.

With a plethora of competing companies all vying for the same market, the requirement to differentiate amongst those competitors leads to confusion marketing, where companies looking for competitive advantage do not want potential customers, or for that matter clients, being able to easily compare their offerings to others. If this involves highly technical areas like telecoms, energy and insurance, even the most sophisticated organisations can find itself hard pressed to make an informed choice without some guidance from genuine specialists. Even if that is available in some areas there is always going to be a deficiency in many others. Outsourcing to Auditel can complement that expertise at no cost and no risk.

If the confusion marketing is not enough in itself then salesmanship can compound the decision‐making problem. If your internal resource does not have a high degree of technical expertise and market awareness, the possibilities of making the wrong choice and losing out on the most competitive best value options increases, particularly if the internal resource is not up to the sales persons skill.

This is the way to think about whom and on what terms to look at an external source for reducing costs. If you ask an individual or company to look at your expenditure, either direct from a supplier or acting on a commission only basis, it is potentially a “cost free” exercise. The problem is that these arrangements are often a zero‐sum game. I win you lose. Either a supplier or an agent is always looking to maximise their gain at your expense, looking only to concede enough to win the account. They are not incentivised to compare with the competition, they are not incentivised to reduce consumption, they are not incentivised to look at historical usage for errors and they are certainly not going to continue to correct errors that are not pointed out to them or look for and reveal more cost saving opportunities as they arise, particularly in the case of competitor offerings.
